Tips and ideas that will help you put together a delicious pasta meal.

Pasta is a delicious, filling and versatile meal option and can be used in a variety of ways to feed your family, friends or for a stay at home dinner for yourself.

It’s also great to have leftovers for lunch the next day, or if you have leftover pasta (without the sauce) throw some tomato, capsicum and olives in for a great salad.

For someone who doesn’t cook regularly or hates the thought of spending any more time in the kitchen than necessary, here are some ideas to make sure you are eating nutritious and varied options that are also good for you.

Remember, it’s OK to buy pasta sauce from the supermarket and add to your favourite pasta you cook at home. I believe that it’s a much cheaper and healthier option than pulling a ready-made meal from the supermarket freezer with the benefit, that you can add the things you love. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of amazing “ready to eat” meals available these days, but, depending on your budget and how much time you have, I believe you have more options doing it yourself.

By cooking your own pasta, you can add the sauce (homemade or store bought) and extras that you love, here are some ideas. Mix and match to suit your taste.

Store bought sauces

Tomato passata - a plain tomato base and is perfect if adding your own meat and vegetable

Marinara - seafood based

Alfredo – cream based

Bolognaise – meat & tomato based

Pesto – Basil & pinenuts

So, you have a bowl of cooked pasta, some sauce - what else can you add?

Chicken – buy a BBQ chicken from the supermarket and pull the meat off, adding some to the pasta sauce

Salami or pancetta – slice and add into the sauce

Chorizo – pan fry it to bring out the oils and enhance the flavour

Sausage – cook and chop up into bite sized pieces

Tin tuna or salmon – in water or oil

Prawns – if your budget allows

Fresh tomato – chopped

Sun dried tomatoes – stronger flavour

Garlic – either crush fresh garlic or buy a jar and have it ready to go in the fridge

Onions – You can fry it or put it in raw depending on your taste

Chilli – use as much or as little as you like

Spinach – buy a packet from the store and throw in a big handful, it will reduce in volume when you cook it

Olives – make sure they have no seeds so you don’t bite into one and break your teeth!

Capsicum – sliced or diced (chopped into small pieces)

Mushrooms – I like to cook them a little in a little bit of butter or oil, I’m not fond of them raw

Green vegetables – cut into small pieces so they cook in the sauce or partially boil beforehand.

Peas – keep a packet of frozen peas in the freezer and throw in a handful, straight from the freezer

Herbs

Parsley – goes with everything

Basil – great with tomato

Cheese

Cheddar - grate cheddar cheese over warm pasta

Parmesan - is great friends with pasta

Blue – use only a small amount

Use your favourite varieties of cheese on their own – Yum!

Experiment, and have fun discovering your own combinations!
